Could New Virtual Reality Technology Worsen the Problem of Social Withdrawal?

An estimated 700,000 Japanese young people, mostly male, suffer from hikikomori, a psychological withdrawal in which one shuts oneself in one’s bedroom, spending the entire day on the Internet and communicating with others only online. The parents of these Internet-addicted recluses worry that virtual reality technology could exacerbate the problem, causing more and more young people to become hikikomori.
